Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)
The common kingfisher is known for its iridescent feathering. Its upperparts are of a radiant blue colour and contrasted by its bright orange underparts. It has bright red feet. Besides its bold colours, the common kingfisher is characterised by its white throat as well as a white patch on either side of the neck. The male has an entirely dark bill while the female’s bill has a reddish underside.
Common kingfishers live by lakes, in wetlands and by slow-flowing streams and rivers. They primarily feed on fish. As they are non-migratory birds and short-distance migrants, many common kingfishers spend the winter in the north.
