Bee-eater (Merops apiaster)

The European Bee-eater can be recognised by its colourful plumage and its long and curved beak.

The upperparts show red-brownish and yellow shades while the underparts shine a beautiful blue-green colour. Other characteristics are the yellow throat as well as the elongated central tail feathers.

European Bee-eaters like to reside on gravel pits and they feed on insects. They love the warmth and therefore travel long distances to warmer regions during the cooler months.
